A land full of history and mystery, where timed ever carved on the faces of an altar, the silhouettes of 16 characters, facts which would be told in ink and chisel for many generations. Well of magical and seductive is Copan, also known as the Kingdom of the Bat, a place with unrivaled beauty, home of a powerful civilization whose knowledge was able to compete with other cultures equally extraordinary, such as Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt. The year 426 A.C marks the beginning of a dynasty, which would last in power for nearly 400 years, a fertile and beautiful valley awaiting the arrival of the first grand Sovereign Kinich Yax K'uk Mo (First Quetzal Macaw Green Sun) who immediately established its domain across the southeastern periphery of the Mayan world. That's how Copan then walked towards its days of splendor, and quickly establishing itself in the domain of arts and sciences such as astronomy, math and sculpture, then latter having a remarkable degree of development, when the thirteenth Sovereign of Copan, "18 Conejos", migrated from the traditional stucco molding on surface, and the revolutionary method of stone sculpture in high relief, thus placing in amaze and wonder to those who visit it today. Unforgettable is the feeling of the visitor, who first visits the great cityof the bat, without doubt, the big square with its stelaes that reminds us of the power and the glory of those who once lived here long ago. Even more amazing is the 21 meters high and 2200 symbols that make up the grand staircase of the hieroglyphs, by the way, the greatest text ever written and known of the Mayan civilization, also declared as a cultural heritage of humanity by the UNESCO in 1981. So impressive is Copan, especially when the echoes of a ball still beat in the 6 macaw markers surrounding the court of the ball game, which is located near the staircase. It´s here where the visitor's senses are trapped in the wings of the great solar macaw, to fly to the South Acropolis and finally end on the jaws of the great temple 22, contemplating almost shocked how macaws still hold n the world of the ancient Mayas. But the mysteries surrounding the acropolis south do not stop there, leading your imagination into the very inside of Temple 16, whose interior so jealously protects the name of the founder of the Copan dynasty, where the tenth Sovereign, moon Jaguar, gave form and life to one of the most iconic and legendary buildings of Copan, the great temple Rosalila, dedicated to the memory of the first sovereign of the bat. And this is where memory leads us to the silhouettes of the 16characters of whom we spoke at the beginning, 16 rulers of a dynasty whose last Sovereign immortalized forever. So quiet but pride, and at the foot of the temple 16, Rosalila´s home, the altar Q invites us to come back again, and so along with it, keep writing the history of this wonderful place. |
