The Copan Archaeological Park is just 1 km west of the city of Copan Ruinas, awaits amidst in a quiet forest along the Rio Copan. To get to the ruins take a nice walk beside trees that provide shade or you can rent a horse or order a taxi to take you directly to the site. The archaeological park is open daily from 08:00am until 04:00 pm. The entrance to visit is $ 15.00 for foreigners.

The Tunnels

The long historical research and excavation at Copan has left an extensive network of tunnels dug under the archaeological site. These tunnels, which used to be closed to public, have opened a window to the past baring tombs and temples that are not in plain sight. (Admission $ 15.00 for foreign).

  

"Las Sepulturas" is an integral part of the Copan Archaeological Project, and it is located just 2 km away from the central park. Known by this name by the Maya practice of burying their dead people in the same house where they lived, we now know that this was an elite residential area of Copan during the days of the reign of Yax-Pac,last king of Copan. This area has opened a window into the lifestyle of the elite Mayan days before the collapse of the Mayan civilization at Copan.

 

Across the banks of the Copan River, located on a small hill from which it has an extraordinary view of the Copan Valley, is "The Frogs". This small set of rock carvings, among which are a form of frogs can be accessed either through a walk of about 45 minutes from the center of Copán Ruinas, or on a horse back ride.

 

The stelae had a mystical meaning to the Mayas. Through these the trees were worshiped , according to thier mythology trees sustained the heavens. They were also a gateway to the "Xibalba", or underworld. Most of the stelae at Copan are located in the ceremonial center mainly in the great square, however, there are stelae strategically distributed throughout the Copán Valley. Most of the stelae that are outside the central park were built by the king's instructions XII dynasty Yax-Kuk-Mo, known as Butz Hunab K'awil, to designate the area of the valley through which he had communication with the gods and ancestors.

  

This museum is without doubt one of the biggest attractions for travelers who visit this archaeological site, Inside exhibit a series of sculptures that have been redeemed within the archaeological site. Among them, the impressive full-scale replica of the RosalilaTemple, also known as Temple of the Sun, discovered under the structure 16 in perfect condition, and that will give visitors a clear idea of how it looked during the era of Copan´s splendor. Other important exhibits are the facade of the Ballgame, stelae and altar Q,(all original). Admission to the museum is worth $ 7.00 U.S. Dollars for foreigners.

 

Without doubt the newest archaeological and educational attraction in Copan Ruinas. This interactive museum dedicated specifically to children is the first of its kind in Honduras. Created by the Copan Association under the direction of Don Ricardo Agurcia Fasquelle,K'inich house is located in "El fuerte Cabañas", 5 blocks north from the park. Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to twelve noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Saturday from 8:00 am to noon, closed Sunday. Access to the museum is free.

Finca El Cisne was founded by Don Armando Castejón Fiallos, one of the most important and influential man in his time in Honduras. Since 1885, the terrains of the Finca El Cisne, originally known as  "Managua Terrain", have belonged to the same family and have been an important part in the history of Copán. Therefore,"El Cisne" has some of the oldest facilities of a coffee farm in western Honduras.

A new tourist attraction in Copan Ruinas that alone justifies a trip to Copan Ruinas. Bird Park and Nature Reserve Macaw Mountain is located just 2 km from the soccer field at the entrance to Copan Ruinas, on the road leading to the "Hot Springs." The park has a collection of birds native to Honduras and Central America and some South American species. All have been rescued from captivity and have been given extensive flight cages where, despite being in captivity, they enjoy a certain freedom and can fly. The property has a large and extensive assortment of plants in the area that have been carefully planted to create a landscape very own site. This coupled with the friendly attention of the guides, all very knowledgeable about birds, will make your stay in the park an unforgettable experience.

  

Located in the village of Agua Caliente, 23 Km from Copan Ruins, about 45 minutes away via a dirt road with beautiful views. Thermal waters flow from a spring to mix with cold water river forming natural pools where you can relax while taking a bath.

Once in Hot Springs, be sure to cross the river and up the mountain to see the spring, which flows less than 30 m from the river.
